Rinzen leaving the crowd breathless

Conventional ideas of a rave may leave you thinking that there's nothing deeper underneath the oontz oontz oontz of the drums—a shallow existence, lacking depth and creativity. This is patently false. My proof? I present to you as evidence: the night of February 8th, when an emotive group of artists came together at the Fruit in Durham, North Carolina for Rinzen’s 2025 World Tour. With Rinzen at the helm, they harnessed the full imaginative power of sound, transporting listeners to an immersive fantasy world of melodic techno.

Rinzen is not your typical progressive producer. There’s a certain depth to his music that transports you to a different world. The Rinzen project itself was inspired by an eponymous work by the painter Antoni Tàpies, whose profound investigations of materiality exist in a liminal space between painting and object, between gesture and substance, the space between permanent and ephemeral. If you listen for it in Rinzen’s music, you can hear that space.

Johan, a New York native now based in North Carolina, opened the night with a melodic set that primed the crowd, slowly building the energy. His sound—a celestial fusion of reverb-drenched synth pads and evocative arpeggiated licks—created an atmosphere that felt both expansive and intimate. Engaging the full spectrum of frequencies, Johan’s airy tones made the small room feel much bigger. The space seemed to warp and swell with the sound, a perfect sonic complement to the static fuzz emanating from the CRT TVs in the retro gaming nook positioned not far from the stage. The darkness of the room allowed the music’s ambient qualities to take hold, immersing listeners in an alternate reality.

Monavent building an ethereal world

Next up was Monavent, an artist who believes in the power of emotion over convention. For Monavent, music doesn’t need to be dark or aggressive or fast to hold your attention. His psy-tech set carved out an ethereal soundscape, where slow classical piano motifs and stepwise melodies acted as anchor points in a shifting, liquid world. It wasn’t the kind of sound typically associated with peak-hour club sets, but if you let it, the music enveloped you, offering a transformative experience all its own. Smooth and intuitive, his set facilitated the ebb and flow of movement and emotion from the audience, who soaked up every minute of the sound.

Rinzen took the stage next, delivering an extended set that took listeners into new and unique sonic dreamscapes. Making his debut in Durham, Rinzen shared that he was eager to play with a more tech-forward sound in his set, where improvisation could breathe new life into his already dynamic style. The highlight came with the live debut of a track he had just finished writing on the plane ride there—a song that would get the largest reaction of the night from an already enthusiastic crowd. Rinzen’s music, rich in atmospheric depth, continued to give the room a sense of limitless expansion, as though the walls themselves had dissolved away, allowing those in attendance a glimpse into the worlds he crafts.

As Rinzen’s set echoed through the room, the visionary nature of the night lingered. Between each of the artists, one thing was clear—a commitment to sound as a conduit for an immersive and emotional experience. Whether you found yourself lost in Johan’s ambient textures, moved by Monavent’s emotive psychedelia, or swept away by Rinzen’s expansive sonic world-building, the night was a statement that music is not just something we listen to—it’s something we experience.
